As an infant, Abram suffered severe spinal cord damage due to a rare neurological disorder. Literally overnight, he was rendered completely paralyzed. The damage was so severe, doctors determined Abram would most likely never be able to walk or talk. Now 10-years-old, he has spent his entire life proving everyone wrong.

Within two years of receiving the diagnosis, Abram had regained movement in his hand and, from that point on, he was determined to start moving. Thanks to ongoing support from Shriners Hospitals for Children® and the help of forearm crutches, Abram not only walks, he races.

Abram’s family loves outdoor activities, and they have always encouraged him to participate. From camping to hiking to rock climbing, Abram has never backed down from a challenge. But when his mom, Jennifer, signed up for a Spartan race last year, Abram was hesitant to join her. Luckily, he decided to give it a try and he had an absolute blast!

Abram has since run a total of six Spartan races, and not one has been a Paralympic event. Because he can’t use his legs, he must be cautious and work hard, but he does it all with as little assistance as possible. According to Jennifer, “As parents, we want to protect our kids from everything. But they can’t get the opportunity to live their lives the way they want to if they don’t have the chance to fail.”

Every time Abram fails, he learns the importance of getting back up and trying again. And he inspires other children in similar situations to do the same. He loves being on the course and encouraging the other kids at the end of the race. Today, Abram knows there are no limits to what he can achieve, and we’re honored to have him as part of the Shriners Hospitals for Children family.
