Read Avery’s inspiring story!
Story Summary
During this stressful and uncertain time, we want to provide you with a bright spot of positivity. In honor of Limb Loss Awareness Month, today’s #SHCBrightSpot is Avery’s remarkable story of overcoming a tragic accident to become an inspiring young athlete.
At just two-and-a-half years old, Avery was involved in a lawn mower accident that resulted in the loss of his left leg. The once active toddler and his family were now suddenly faced with an uncertain future.
His parents knew they wanted the best care for their son as he adjusted to his new lifestyle, but they struggled to find a health care system that could provide the answers and support Avery needed. It wasn’t until a close friend referred Avery and his family to Shriners Hospitals for Children® that they found their home.
Meet Avery! #SHCBrightSpot
Avery received revision surgery on his leg and became a patient in the Pediatric Orthotic and Prosthetic Services, or POPS, program. He formed a special bond with his prosthetist, Darren, who was also in a lawn mower accident as a child. Avery’s parents say it’s an amazing feeling to have Darren caring for their son. “He knows exactly what Avery is going through. He can relate to him because he has been there and done that,” says Avery’s mom, Kelsey.
Now eight years old, Avery is able to play the sports he loves including soccer, baseball, and basketball, all because of the care he receives at Shriners Hospitals for Children. He even wants to try playing football this upcoming season. Your support of the specialized care Avery and so many other young patients need has changed their lives. And, with your help, we can continue to treat Avery as he grows, so he can keep enjoying a healthy, active childhood.
