Walk for LOVE patient ambassador, Brantley

Brantley, 9, lives in Estacada, OR, and will always be excited to show you his latest Taekwondo move!

Brantley was born with Spina Bifida and at one day old had a shunt placed into his brain and a defect on his back repaired. At 6 months old, after two more shunt surgeries and physical therapy, Brantley was doing things like rolling over and sitting up -things that his mother was told normally would not happen until he was at least two or three.

At two years old, an energetic Brantley was referred to Shriners Children’s Portland to be fitted for a Reciprocating Gait Orthosis (RGO), which is a full body brace that allows a person to stand and walk, usually with a lot of effort. Since his first therapy appointment using his RGO, Brantley has not stopped moving and is often seen chatting and high-fiving many of the staff at Shriners Children’s Portland, including the schedulers, clinic staff and his physical therapist, Joel.

When he is not at Shriners Children’s Portland or school, Brantley likes to practice taekwondo, play video games, and make new friends.

Walk for LOVE patient ambassador, Madison

Madison, 10, lives in Banks, OR, and is always smiling!

During her first soccer practice at 4 years old, Madison struggled to keep up with other children. Subsequent falls and physical difficulties were initially diagnosed as hypotonic cerebral palsy. However, further investigation revealed an ultra-rare form of mitochondrial disease caused by an MT-CO1 gene mutation, shared by only five other documented cases globally. Madison’s condition severely affects her muscles, necessitating the use of a power wheelchair and requiring other medical interventions daily.

Despite enduring six surgeries, numerous hospitalizations, and invasive tests, Halsey, Madison’s mother said, “Madison always has a smile on her face and is everyone’s best friend.” Madison remains resilient and optimistic, supported by her care team at Shriners Children’s Portland, including orthopedic surgeon Dominque Laron, M.D. and physical therapist Joel Cowley, PT. “Joel always makes sure my mom is heard, and I am taken care of and working hard to keep my body moving,” Madison said.

In her free time, Madison loves to practice gymnastics with her sister. One day, Madison wants to open an animal sanctuary for all animals, so attending the Walk for LOVE at the Oregon Zoo is a PURRR-fect fit!
