Walk for LOVE patient ambassador, Brantley
Meet Brantley, the 2023 Shriners Children’s Portland Walk for LOVE patient ambassador. Brantley is eight years old and is from Estacada, OR, and is happy to show you his latest Taekwondo move.
During a routine ultrasound, Brantley’s mom learned that her son had Spina Bifida. At one day old, Brantley had a shunt placed into his brain, and the defect on his back repaired. Two more shunt surgeries and physical therapy followed, just in the first few weeks of his life. By six months, Brantley was doing things like rolling over and sitting up, things that Brantley’s mom was told by people in the Spina Bifida community wouldn’t normally happen until he was at least two or three.
Once Brantley grew, his physical therapist recommended he go to Shriners Children’s Portland and get a Reciprocating Gait Orthosis (RGO), which is a full body brace that allows a person to stand and walk, usually with a lot of effort. At two years old, Brantley got his RGO and had his first therapy appointment at Shriners Children’s Portland.
Life for Brantley has been energetic and active ever since. Coming in for appointments frequently since he was young, Brantley often is chatting and high-fiving many of the staff at Shriners Children’s Portland, including the schedulers, clinic staff and his physical therapist, Joel. When he is not at Shriners Children’s Portland or school, Brantley likes to practice taekwondo, play video games, and make new friends.
